Spirit of Assisi 2016: Pope Francis to Return to Assisi for World Day of Prayer for Peace
September 18-20, 2016 the 30th anniversary of the historic day of 27 October 1986 when Pope St. John Paul II proclaimed the first World Day of Prayer for Peace in the "Spirit of Assisi" that has spread since then to many corners of the world.
To mark the historic event, Pope Francis will return to Assisi to participate in the World Day of Prayer for Peace, September 20. With the Pope both the Ecumenical Patriarch S.S. Bartholomew I and the President of the Italy, Sergio Mattarella will be present.
Thirty years later, once again, men and women of various religions and cultures will gather in Assisi, in the city that Pope St. John Paul II described as "the place that the seraphic figure of St. Francis has turned into a center of universal brotherhood". The meeting intends to meet the challenges of the contemporary world through sincere and positive dialogue to create a climate of trust, respect and cooperation, important in building a better future for humanity.
The meeting of the 30th Anniversary of the Spirit of Assisi will begin with an assembly the afternoon of Sunday, September 18, followed on Monday and Tuesday morning with three sessions, 30 panel on the issues dealing with interreligious dialogue and justice and peace in contemporary society.
The three days will end with a closing ceremony in the Lower Square of the Basilica of St. Francis, where will be proclaimed and signed a common appeal for peace.
The meeting will be attended by leaders of the Christian Churches and the great religions, and representatives of the international political and cultural world as well as representatives of governments from different areas of the world.
The commemorative event, this year, is sponsored by the Diocese of Assisi, the Franciscan Families and the Sant'Egidio Community along with other movements and ecclesial groups, in collaboration with the Episcopal Conference Umbria, the Umbrian Region and the Municipality of Assisi.
The meeting taking place in Assisi in 2016 is particularly significant, during the Holy Year of Mercy, proclaimed by Pope Francis. It and numerous other national and international meetings will celebrate the "Spirit of Assisi" promoted by the Sant'Egidio Community and other ecclesial groups.
In Cloister of Sixtus IV of St. Francis Basilica, an exhibit retraces through images the events that characterized the last 30 years of the "Spirit of Assisi" from 1986 until today.
