The Lenten Program at the ‘Porziuncola’ The Conversion of Saint Peter
The Lenten Season begins on February 14th, Ash Wednesday, called by Pope Francis in his Lenten Message for 2018 - a "sacramental sign of our conversion". The Pope invites everyone to continue the journey of conversion simply by referring to the "tools" that the Church has always proposed as a "sweet remedy": prayer, almsgiving and fasting. In addition, he invites those whom the Lord in this holy time calls to a ‘new conversion’, to take part in the "24 Hours for the Lord" initiative. The Friars Minor of the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels welcome the invitation of the Holy Father. The faithful, who will be on pilgrimage to Assisi from March 9th to 10th, therefore, are advised that on Friday, the 9th, there will be a 9 a.m. Mass, that will begin a period of Eucharistic adoration in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. Adoration will continue until 9.00 a.m. on Saturday March 10th. The opportunity to meet and receive God’s mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be provided for those who wish.As another spiritual aid, a Lenten catechesis will be offered during the celebration of Vespers every Wednesday evening. These lessons will have as their theme "The conversion of Simon Peter": in order to bring about, together with the Apostle Peter, our own journey of conversion. These liturgical moments, like all the celebrations held at the papal altar of the Basilica, will be broadcast live on the Porziuncola WebTV. The first four catecheses will be presented by the parish priests of the united Parish of Santa Maria degli Angeli; while the fifth catechesis - the one that introduces the Sacred Triduum - will be held by Fr. Simone Ceccobao OFM.Furthermore: The Stations of the Cross will be prayed in the Basilica at 5 p.m. every Friday of Lent. On Good Friday they will be held at 3 p.m. to allow for the 5 p.m. celebration of the Passion of the Lord. For those who wish and did not have the opportunity in the afternoon there will be the additional opportuntity to pray the Stations of the Cross every Friday at 9.00 p.m. They will be conducted by the Parish of Saint Mary of the Angels, outside in the plaza or, if weather doesn’t permit, inside the Basilica Finally, the Marian prayer on Saturday evenings, at 9.15 pm will continue. As we do every Lent, the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary will be recited, followed by the usual flambeaux procession.Download the program here.
